Joseph E. Scalia

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Joseph now lives on Long Island, where he has taught English and Creative Writing. Always a writer himself, he started by scribbling what he calls "terrible rhyming poems on bathroom walls."

Over the years he has written three novels, amassed a volume of short stories, No Strings Attached, compiled countless humorous essays, and filled at least one filing cabinet with his poetry, some of which has found its way into print actually on paper!

The idea for his novel FREAKs (Honorable Mention, Writer´s Digest 9th Annual Book Competition) came to him one morning in a study hall, when he met Carol, the real limping seventh grader who would become the model for the book's character Hildy. Similarly, all the other characters in FREAKs have been drawn from his long teaching experience.

His second novel, Pearl, (Finalist, ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Awards) was inspired by years of teaching Steinbeck´s The Pearl. Scalia´s novella is not a sequel, but a work that stands on its own merits.

His most recent release is No Strings Attached, a collection of short stories.

Two divorces and four kids later, today he lives with cats Silvier and Ursuler in a cardboard box somewhere in Farmingdale. He hopes that book sales will keep them all in cat food.
